Welcome to our website

Rheem South Africa is one of the leading privately owned industrial packaging companies in the country. We manufacture steel and tinplate packaging products for the petroleum, paint, resin, mining, adhesive, ink, coating and chemical industries. Rheem South Africa’s team has been committed to perfecting the process of converting coiled steel into drums and tinplate into pails and cans for over 40 years (see each plant for details). The company has 471 employees.

The company was established in 1967 through drum and pail manufacturing operations in Durban and Alrode. In 1978 the company commenced manufacturing crowns in Alrode for the beverage industry. In 1982 the Vanderbijlpark steel, tinplate decoiling and cutting facility was established to meet the needs of our manufacturing plants, and also other customers who need the steel and tinplate decoiling and cutting services. In 1993 the company started producing aluminium beverage cans in Wadeville.

The beverage can manufacturing facility in Wadeville was later disposed of, and the crown making plant in Alrode sold-off to South African Breweries. The company was at that time a subsidiary of the Anglo American Corporation and owned by Highveld Steel and Vanadium.

In 2001 an investment consortium led by Dr Oscar Dhlomo, and included Brait Private Equity and Management, acquired all the issued share capital of the company from Highveld Steel and Vanadium. In 2007 Rheem South Africa acquired a majority stake in a plastics pail and can manufacturer which is now based in Jetpark.

The company’s head office is in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa with manufacturing plants in Durban (KwaZulu-Natal), Alrode (Gauteng), Jetpark (Gauteng) and Cape Town (Western Cape). We have a steel and tinplate decoiling and cutting facility cut to length plant in Vanderbijlpark (Gauteng). The company also operates a distribution agency in Port Elizabeth (Eastern Cape).

Rheem South Africa is a member of Drumnet, an international drum manufacturers’ association based in Europe with members across the world. This membership ensures we remain at the forefront of international benchmarks in product design and quality. All our manufacturing plants are accredited.

In an effort to contribute to the overall packaging industry’s social responsibility, Rheem South Africa is a member of the Packaging Council of South Africa.

Rheem South Africa remains fully aware of the vital role we play in our customers’ value chain. The company aims to offer not only steel and tinplate packaging, but various packaging solutions to the Sub-Saharan region to meet diverse needs of the players in the region’s packaging industry.
